Sally: Thanks Chuck! Today’s Topic is: Covid Insurance!

Chuck: OK … Max, Patty, I’ll give you a word, you give us a definition. First correct answer wins. Fingers on buzzers. Ready? … Word one: ‘Insurance’ Patty.

Patty: It’s a deal where you pay someone, and they agree to give you compensation if something bad happens

Chuck: That’s right! Sally?

Sally: Most insurance firms in Taiwan were offering generous Covid policies at the start of the pandemic, when cases here were low and they could make lots money.

Chuck: Word two: ‘Policies’ Patty again!

Patty: They’re contracts, signed by the insurance firms and their clients

Chuck: Go on …

Patty: So, for a firm a ‘covid policy’ would list everything they’d legally agreed to do if their client ever got sick

Chuck: Correct! Sally?

Sally: When the number of cases started to rise so did the amount of people claiming on their policies. But the firms had been too generous, they couldn’t afford to pay everyone what they promised.

Chuck: Word three: ‘Claiming’ Max

Max: Making a claim is like applying for your money isn’t it? You have to prove that something bad has happened to you before they’ll help you.

Chuck: Correct! Sally?

Sally: The government was forced to intervene after some firms were found to be unfairly dismissing claims, policies, and payouts. Insurers have since been ordered to honor all legitimate Covid-related policies

Chuck: Word four: ‘Legitimate’ Patty again!!

Patty: When something is allowed according to the rules?

Chuck: That’s the end of the round, and Patty is our clear winner with three points! Patty, you win! Congratulations!
