Now, please welcome your host, Chuck McSilver!
Chuck: Hello and welcome to another episode of Top of the Topics! The show where if you don’t know the news …
Audience: You Lose!
Chuck: Let’s meet today’s contestants: give ‘em a warm welcome, folks, it’s Eric and Jessie!
Chuck: Jessie, Eric, welcome to the show!
Both: Thanks Chuck!
Chuck: Eric, you’re back!
Eric: Of course, Chuck! I’m not going anywhere … !
Chuck: Jessie, you think you can take him on?
Jessie: He’s going down, Chuck!
Chuck: Well, one of you is getting knocked out, that’s for sure! Let’s see who, with a trip to Clever Corner for everyone’s favorite resident know-it-all, Sally Smartypants! Sally?
Sally: Thanks Chuck! Today’s Topic is: US Independence Day!
Chuck: Okie dokie …Jessie, Eric, I’ll give you a word, you give us a definition. First correct answer wins. Fingers on buzzers. Ready? … Word one: ‘Independence’ essie.
Jessie: It means you do everything for yourself, you don’t rely on anyone for anything
Chuck: Correct! Sally?
Sally: Happening every year on the 4th of July, Independence Day recognizes the US’s exit from the British Empire, and the signing of the ‘Declaration of Independence’.
Chuck: Word two: ‘Declaration’ Eric.
Eric: It’s like a formal statement, when you ‘declare’ something you’re officially announcing it to the whole world
Chuck: One point each. Sally?
Sally: Interestingly, The first ever Independence Day was held in 1777, one year after the Declaration was signed and 7 years before the end of the American Revolution.
Chuck: Word three: ‘Revolution’ Jessie.
Jessie: It’s when people try to overthrow their country’s government by force
Chuck: Correct! Sally?
Sally: Today celebrations are found all over America, traditionally involving huge parades, tasty BBQ’s, flag ceremonies, and awesome fireworks!
Chuck: Word four: ‘Celebrations’ Jessie.
Jessie: They’re good times to help mark a special occasion, like a national holiday!
Chuck: Correct! That sound means we’ve run out of time, and Jessie’s our winner with three points! Sorry to see you go, Eric! What a great player, huh guys?
Eric: Thanks Chuck! I had a really great time.
Chuck: Jessie, congratulations! Let’s see what you’ve won, Sally?
Sally: Our exclusive Top of the Topics Trophy; a signed copy of Chuck’s best-selling autobiography, ‘Chuck It Out’; and, of course, another chance to win some great prizes right here on the show!
