Sally: Thanks Chuck! Today’s Topic is: The ‘Taiwan Stay’ Hotel Subsidies

Chuck: OK … Sharon, Jay, I’ll give you a word, you give us a definition. First correct answer wins. Fingers on buzzers. Ready? … Word one: ‘Subsidies’ Jay.

Jay: When the government wants to help businesses by handing out sums of money, that’s a subsidy

Chuck: But, how does that help businesses?

Jay: Well, people can only get this money if they stay at specific hotels. So it’s encouraging people to visit them and spend more

Chuck: Correct! Sally?

Sally: Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Taiwan’s tourism industry has been struggling financially for over 2 years. These subsidies are in place to help speed up its recovery.

Chuck: Word two: ‘Financially’ Sharon.

Sharon: It’s anything to do with money!

Chuck: You got it! One point each. Sally?

Sally: There are lots of great incentives, for example: anyone who has already had three doses of any Covid vaccine could receive an additional 500 NT dollars a night towards their hotel stay!

Chuck: Word three: ‘Incentives’ Jay.
