Announcer: You’re listening to: Top of the Topics!

[中文] 熱浪侵襲歐洲,造成不少災害

Now, please welcome your host, Chuck McSilver!

Chuck: Hello and welcome to another episode of Top of the Topics! The show where if you don’t know the news …

Audience: You Lose!

Chuck: Let’s meet today’s contestants: ladies and gentlemen, say hello to Ken and Ting! Welcome to the show guys!

Both: Thanks Chuck!

Chuck: Ting! Back for another week!

Ting: I know!

Chuck: Ken! It’s up to you … feeling confident?

Ken: You betcha!

Chuck: Now, listen up everyone: Sally Smartypants is away on vacation …So, we have a very special guest here helping this week: give it up for Old GrandPappy Smartypants!

OGS: Thanks Chunk!

Chuck: It’s Chuck.

OGS: Eh?!

Chuck: Never mind …

OGS: Speak up, Chunky!

Chuck: What’s our topic this week, Pops?

OGS: ‘European Heatwaves’

Chuck: Okie-day … Ken, Ting, I’ll give you a word, you give us a definition. First correct answer wins. Fingers on buzzers. Ready? … Word one: ‘Heatwave’ Ken.

Ken: It’s a kind of natural disaster, I guess, where the weather stays really hot for a really long time

Chuck: Correct! Pops?

OGS: Europe has seen three devastating heatwaves this year, causing wildfires, droughts, and fatalities all over the continent

Chuck: Word two: ‘Droughts’ Ken.

Ken: It’s when you see dry lakes and rivers. The water starts running out, usually because there isn’t enough rain.

Chuck: Correct! Two points. Pops?

OGS: Temperatures in Europe have been hitting record-breaking levels, averaging highs of 32 degrees Celsius in some areas. Parts of Portugal are reported to have reached an incredible 47 degrees Celsius.

Chuck: Word three: ‘Averaging’ Ting.

Ting: In math it’s when one number represents lots of numbers. It’s a fast way of looking at lots of data.

Chuck: I was never very good at math, Ting!

Ting: So, if you’re saying the average temperature has been 32 degrees Celsius in Europe, that means it’s been roughly that hot all over the continent!

Chuck: Correct! Wow, what a scorcher! Even in normally colder places like the UK, Pops?

OGS: That’s right. In the UK roads have melted, lakes have dried up, and railways have been bending and breaking! All because of the extraordinary heat. Climatologists agree these heatwaves have all been directly caused by climate change and global warming.

Chuck: That sound means we’ve run out of time, and Ken’s is our new winner with two points! See you next time Ken?

Ken: You bet!
