[中文]半導體產業~~讓台灣在世界發光發熱

Now, please welcome your host, Chuck McSilver!

Chuck: Hello and welcome to another episode of Top of the Topics! The show where if you don’t know the news …

Audience: You Lose!

Chuck: Let’s meet today’s contestants: ladies and gentlemen, say hello to May and Ken!

Chuck: May, Ken, welcome to the show!

Both: Thanks Chuck!

Chuck: Ken, feeling good?

Ken: Feeling great, Chuck!

Chuck: And May, it’s your first show!

May: Let’s do this!

Chuck: We’re on it! But first we have go to Clever Corner to welcome back everyone’s favorite resident know-it-all’s grandfather, Old GrandPappy Smartypants! How you doing Pops?

OGS: Sally? Is that you?

Chuck: It’s me: Chuck!

OGS: Oh, that’s right. You’re that Chunky boy …

Chuck: Moving on …

OGS: Chunks McDither, right?

Chuck: What’s our topic, Pops?

OGS: ‘Semiconductors’

Chuck: OK … May, Ken, I’ll give you a word, you give us a definition. First correct answer wins. Fingers on buzzers. Ready? … Word one: ‘Conductor’ Ken.

Ken: Anything that lets electricity or heat move through it.

Chuck: Can you give us an example?

Ken: Err, water?

Chuck: Correct! Pops?

OGS: Electricity also moves through semiconductors, but only under the right conditions. Scientists can use special tools to control the flow, which means they can create lots of cool new inventions!

Chuck: Word two: ‘Inventions’ May.

May: Things that have never been made, done, or thought of ever before!

Chuck: Correct! One point each. Pops?

OGS: Taiwan is considered the world’s ‘semiconductor headquarter’ thanks to a man called Morris Chang, who invented the first ever dedicated semiconductor foundry.

Chuck: Word three: ‘Foundry’ May.

May: It’s a place where they make metal things.

Chuck: Correct! So, semiconductors are metal?

May: Some of them, Chuck. The one we use most often is called Silicon, that’s a kind of metal

Chuck: That sound means we’ve run out of time, and May’s our winner with two points! Disappointed, Ken?

Ken: Not at all! She deserved it, well played May!

Chuck: Aw! Aren’t our contestants just the greatest?! Give it up for em both, gang!
