Announcer: You’re listening to: Top of the Topics!

[中文] 當颱風來了,你做了什麼準備?

Now, please welcome your host, Chuck McSilver!

Chuck: Hello and welcome to another episode of Top of the Topics! The show where if you don’t know the news …

Audience: You Lose!

Chuck: Let’s meet today’s contestants: ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for Sherry and Terry!

Chuck: Sherry, Terry, welcome to the show!

Both: Thanks Chuck!

Chuck: Sherry, lovely to see you again!

Sherry: You too!

Chuck: Terry, hi! Or, do you prefer Terence?

Terry: Whatever you like, Chuck! Or is it Charles?

Chuck: I’m not sure now, you’ve confused me Terry! But I know someone who can help: Let’s go to Clever Corner and ask everyone’s favorite resident know-it-all, Sally Smartypants! Sally?

Sally: Thanks Chuck! I can’t ever imagine calling you Charles … !

Chuck: Chuck it is! What’s Sally short for?

Sally: It’s just my genes …

Chuck: What’s our topic today, Sally?

Sally: Typhoon Season!

Chuck: Alrighty then … Sherry, Terry, I’ll give you a word, you give us a definition. First correct answer wins. Fingers on buzzers. Ready? … Word one: ‘Typhoon’ Terry.

Terry: It’s a really big, damaging storm! Full of strong winds and heavy rain

Chuck: Correct! Sally?

Sally: Typhoons happen when wind blows over a warm ocean, lifting up moisture. Cold air moves in under the moisture, creating pressure, which makes the wind spin dangerously fast!

Chuck: Word two: ‘Pressure’ Sherry.

Sherry: It’s a pushing force. Think about opening a door: when it is pushed, it opens. It works thanks to pressure.

Chuck: Correct! One point each. Sally?

Sally: Taiwan is right in the center of ‘Typhoon Alley’, which has the most typhoons in the world. The most devastating to hit the island was Typhoon Morakot in 2009, which hurt or killed over 720 people

Chuck: Word three: ‘Devastating’. Terry

Terry: Anything that’s really, really damaging

Chuck: Correct! Two points. Sally?

Sally: Some typhoons can be really devastating, but others can actually be helpful! The massive amount of rain can help feed crops, stop droughts, and reduce temperatures.

Chuck: Uh-oh! That sound means we’ve run out of time, and Terry’s our winner with 2 points!

Terry: No way!!! Thanks so much, Chuck! And Sally!

Sally: You’re welcome Terry! And remember everyone, typhoons are crazy! It’s important to be ready for anything: Re-enforce your homes, look out for official government updates, collect supplies, and be ready to evacuate if you need to.

Chuck: Thanks Sally! What would we do without you?!
