Announcer: You’re listening to: Top of the Topics!

[中文]明年一月起,基本工資調漲囉!

Now, please welcome your host, Chuck McSilver!

Chuck: Hello and welcome to another episode of Top of the Topics! The show where if you don’t know the news …

Audience: You Lose!

Chuck: Let’s meet today’s contestants: ladies and gentlemen, say hello to Johnny and June!

Chuck: Johnny, June, welcome to the show!

Both: Thanks Chuck!

Chuck: June! You were so great last week!

June: I’ll be even better this week, Chuck!

Chuck: Whoa! Nervous Johnny?

Johnny: You bet!

Chuck: There’s nothing to worry about! Come on, let’s head over to Clever Corner to welcome back everyone’s favorite resident know-it-all, Sally Smartypants! Sally?

Sally: Thanks Chuck! Today’s Topic is: the minimum wage hike!

Chuck: Okie-dokie-doo! Johnny, June, I’ll give you a word, you give us a definition. First correct answer wins. Fingers on buzzers. Ready? … Word one: ‘Hike’ June.

June: Easy one, Chuck. It’s a long walk

Chuck: Wrong answer, June!

June: What?! No way!

Chuck: Remember, today’s topic is all about money, finances … Johnny, want to give it a try?

Johnny: Well, I like going up mountains when I’m hiking. So, is it when people’s wages go up too?

Chuck: Well done Johnny! One point to you. Sally?

Sally: When any amount of money is ‘hiked’, it’s been raised. A minimum wage is the lowest amount an employer is legally obliged to pay their staff.

Chuck: Word two: ‘Obliged’ June.

June: It’s when you have to do something, you have no choice.

Chuck: Correct! One point each. Sally?

Sally: This isn’t the first time the government has felt obliged to raise the minimum wage. Since 2016 monthly salaries have risen by 26.2%, and hourly salaries have gone up by 40%

Chuck: Word three: ‘Salaries’ Johnny

Johnny: They’re like wages … it’s the money you get paid for doing your job

Chuck: That’s it! Two points to you! Sally?

Sally: In Taiwan the government is divided into 5 separate branches, each with their own responsibilities. One branch, the Executive Yuan, is responsible for making any financial decisions, like raising salaries or monitoring interest rates.

Chuck: Uh-oh! That sound means we’ve run out of time, and Johnny’s our winner with 2 points!

Johnny: Woo-hoo!

Chuck: Well played Johnny! Ready to defend your title next week?

Johnny: For sure!
