Host: Welcome to News Quest.
Voice: News Quest!
Host: On today’s program: the Voting Age Referendum
Voice: What?
Host: A general vote on a single political question: ‘Should the voting and candidacy age be lowered to 18-year-olds in Taiwan?’
Voice: Where?
Host: The minimum voting age in Taiwan is currently 20. It’s one of a small number of democratic countries that don’t allow 18-year-olds a vote.
Voice: How?
Host: It would require a constitutional amendment, which can only happen if over half the electorate agree: at least 9.65 million people
Voice: Why?
Host: It’s argued that, if 18-year-olds can be prosecuted as adults or enlisted in the military, they should be given equal civil and political rights.
Voice: Who?
Host: All over Taiwan young people have been campaigning, raising awareness and increasing support
Voice: When?
Host: This referendum is due to be held at the same time as Taiwan’s local elections, on November 26th.
