[中文] 「18歲公民權」!11月26號由你來決定。
Now, please welcome your host, Chuck McSilver!
Chuck: Hello and welcome to another episode of Top of the Topics! The show where if you don’t know the news …
Audience: You Lose!
Chuck: Let’s meet today’s contestants: Give it up guys, for Harry and Megan!
Chuck: Harry, Megan, welcome to the show!
Both: Thanks Chuck!
Chuck: Harry, this is your third week! Wanna make it four?
Harry: With all my heart, Chuck!
Chuck: And Megan, think you can stop him?
Megan: I know I can!
Chuck: This is gonna be great! First, let’s get the whole crew together, with a trip to Clever Corner and a big hello to everyone’s favorite resident know-it-all, Sally Smartypants! Sally?
Sally: Thanks Chuck! Today’s Topic is: The Voting Age Referendum
Chuck: Coolio! Let’s get started: Harry, Megan, I’ll give you a word, you give us a definition. First correct answer wins. Fingers on buzzers. Ready? … Word one: ‘Referendum’ Harry.
Harry: A vote taken on a single political issue. So people can only choose one of two options: yes, or no!
Chuck: Correct! Harry charging ahead! Sally?
Sally: This upcoming referendum is all about the minimum voting age. It’s asking: ‘Should the voting and candidacy age be lowered to 18-year-olds in Taiwan?’
Chuck: Word two: ‘Minimum’ Megan.
Megan: It’s the smallest amount of something!
Chuck: Correct! One point each! Sally?
Sally: The minimum voting age here is currently 20. Taiwan is one of a small number of democratic countries that don’t allow 18-year-olds a vote. It’s argued that, if 18-year-olds can be prosecuted as adults or enlisted in the military, they should be given equal civil and political rights.
Chuck: Word three: ‘Government’ Megan.
Megan: It’s a group of people who have the power to manage and run a country or state.
Chuck: That’s it! Two points! Sally?
Sally: Changing the minimum voting age here in Taiwan would mean a constitutional amendment, which the government can only do if half the voting population agree … at least 9.65 million people!
Chuck: Word four: ‘Constitutional Amendment’ Megan.
Megan: Well, a ‘constitution’ is a collection of ideas and principles that guide a country or state, right? And an ‘amendment’ is a change … so … it must be when a country’s principles are changed!
Chuck: That’s it! Megan, three points! Sally?
Sally: If you’re aged 20 or over, get ready: this referendum will be held at the same time as Taiwan’s local elections, on November 26th
Chuck: Uh-oh! That sound means we’ve run out of time, and Megan’s our winner with 3 points! Didn’t she do well?!
Harry: She did great!
