Announcer: You’re listening to: Top of the Topics!

[中文] 2022國際技能競賽,台灣大秀實力!!

Now, please welcome your host, Chuck McSilver!

Chuck: Hello and welcome to another episode of Top of the Topics! The show where if you don’t know the news …

Audience: You Lose!

Chuck: Let’s meet today’s contestants: ladies and gentlemen, say hello to Adam and Eve!

Chuck: Adam, Eve, welcome to the show!

Both: Thanks Chuck!

Chuck: Eve! So glad we could tempt you back …

Eve: How could I resist?!

Chuck: And Adam, welcome to the show!

Adam: Thanks, it’s an honor to be here Chuck!

Chuck: What a gent! And now ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, please be upstanding for everyone’s favorite resident know-it-all, it’s Sally Smartypants! Sally?

Sally: Thanks Chuck! Today’s Topic is: The 2022 WorldSkills Competition!

Chuck: Fine and dandy! OK, Adam, Eve, I’ll give you a word, you give us a definition. First correct answer wins. Fingers on buzzers. Ready? … Word one: ‘WorldSkills’ Adam

Adam: It means you’re able to take care of yourself on your own. Like ‘street-smarts’?

Chuck: Good guess, but no. Eve, give it a try: ‘WorldSkills’ …?

Eve: I think I actually know this one! It’s a name, right? For an organization or … something?

Chuck: Close enough, take a point! Sally?

Sally: You were right, Eve! ‘WorldSkills’ is the name of an organization, they promote vocational trades, like carpentry or mechanics. Their global competition is designed so technical education students can compete against each other, to find the best in the world.

Chuck: Word two: ‘Vocational’ Adam.

Adam: Something you do on holiday?

Chuck: Wrong answer again Adam! Eve, any ideas?

Eve: When a job’s ‘vocational’, you have to train a lot and learn very particular things to do it right.

Chuck: Correct! Two points! Sally?

Sally: This year, Taiwan’s vocational team did really well! They came 3rd overall, and won 42 medals, including 6 gold, 13 silver, and 6 bronze, as well as 17 medallions for excellence!

Chuck: Word three: ‘Medallions’ Adam

Adam: Any jewelry that’s shaped like a medal, and worn around the neck. It’s mostly used for medals from ancient Roman times!

Chuck: Nicely done! 2 for Eve, 1 for Adam. Sally?

Sally: Medals and medallions were handed out in a total of 62 different skills contests, promoting new, interesting job opportunities to a younger generation

Chuck: Uh-oh! That sound means we’ve run out of time, and Eve’s our winner with 2 points!
